6 Easy Hosting Tips To Make Guests Feel At Home | wit and delight

Whenever I’m hosting overnight guests, there are a few simple things I always do to make sure they feel truly welcome in our home. In my experience, being a truly welcoming host is about anticipating your guests’ needs in advance and making sure they are comfortable at your place. Here are some simple hosting tips I swear will help me do just that.

Simple hosting tips to make guests feel at home

1. Ask about their dietary preferences.

Most hosting opportunities center at least a little bit around food, which is why I think it’s so important to gather any dietary preferences or restrictions beforehand. That way, even if you don’t plan the entire meal based on a guest’s preference, you can still be sure they have options when they sit down to eat.

2. Tell them what you need them to bring.

I think it’s really great when everyone can contribute something to a meal (or a full weekend of meals). Ask them to bring a side dish for the meal, snacks to munch on, or ask them to bring a favorite dish they are known for (like my mom’s pumpkin bread)!

3. Provide a schedule.

Whenever I host, I like to provide guests with some timeline of how things are going. Even if it’s a loose, flexible schedule, information like this helps them know what to expect so they can plan and pack accordingly.

4. Consider their location.

Whether they’re in the guest room or on the couch, consider the space they’ll be in. Make sure there are window treatments (to block the light while they sleep), clean towels, clean sheets, and an easy place to plug in their phone.

5. Make it comfortable.

Once all the primary things are taken care of, I like to add a few extras in their place. It can be an extra cozy lamp or a scented candle and matches. These little extra touches help ensure that they will truly feel at home in our home.

6. Point out the major items as they come.

Pay attention to where they can get water, snacks, and anything else when they are in your home. I find it helpful to give a quick list of where they can access essentials like this, with a reminder to help themselves to whatever they want!
