Universal Standard is one of my all-time favorite brands. Their commitment to maintaining sizes 00-40 in all items and their excellent quality and fit means they are some of the most worn items in my wardrobe. They’re classic styles—some with a twist—that can live in heavy rotation in your wardrobe. I love that I can recommend this brand to all of my readers, not just my plus-size ones.

About Universal Standard Sample Cell: This is an annual sale where a wide range of US styles are being heavily discounted, with some items up to 75% off. 2022 Universal Standard sample sale dates are July 20-August 1. sizes and colors sold out immediately, so if you have your eye on something, I encourage you to shop early. The styles in this sale are final sale, but there’s a very strong American fan base on Facebook, Poshmark, and other resale sites that you can tap into to sell items that don’t really work.

About Universal Standard Size: Currently the most size-inclusive range of clothing available in the US (apart from custom/bespoke options). They have sizes 00-40 with incredibly detailed measurements for each item. Their S, M, L, etc. labels differ from what you’re used to, so if you haven’t bought them before – please refer to the size chart! I’m 5’10 and usually wear a 28 in Lane Bryant and Eloqui. My measurements are between US XL and 2XL. I have size labels on all the pictures below for reference. Question about size? tell me!

I have a lot of Universal Standard pieces, many of which are included in sample sales. This special sale has a nice mix of longtime US staples and new pieces. Here are some of my favorites that you can score at a big discount. SHOP THE ENTIRE SAMPLE SALE HERE – Tip: Quickly sort the available items by size because they go quickly.

long sleeve stretch poplin shirt dress

This stretch poplin shirt dress is a total classic. Wear it on its own, wear it open or half-open with pants, belt it up, roll up the sleeves, wear it over a tank dress, or throw a blazer or cardigan on top — it’s versatile and will never go out of style. I’m wearing a size 2XL in the blue and white stripe.

Whitney super high rise seam tapered leg jeans

I have a really hard time finding denim that I love wearing. I have a very long torso but short legs, and also an apron belly/b-belly which means denim often hits a weird spot. For this reason, I prefer high rise denim that is really high rise. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to wear high rise denim only to end up cutting me in an awkward spot, right in the middle of my stomach. Universal Standard has already made my favorite jeans, the Joni High Rise Curve (the sample is also included in the sale) — but these super high rise Whitney jeans best them. They are very comfortable – there is some stretch but nothing that will leave you “loose”, and the waist goes exactly where I want it. I would prefer the plain version of these jeans without the center seam down the leg, but also think that the center seam creates a nice visual line for the body. These are dark washes, but lighter washes are also available.

Lightweight Merino Tunic Sweater

I saw this sweater on social media when Universal Standard had mystery boxes, and I became obsessed. The drape, the cut, the material – *chef kisses* It comes in some pretty colors and I can’t wait to wear it into heavy rotation when the weather gets a little cooler. This is a very soft lightweight merino and would look great in fall as well as winter.

misa jersey dress

This outfit is a regular go-to in my warm weather wardrobe. I now have it in 3 shades and find myself constantly reaching for it when I want something casual, but still with some shape. It’s as comfortable as wearing an oversize T-shirt, but MUCH cooler! Size-wise, I have it in both XL and 2XL and prefer the 2XL hence my height.

Misa Jersey Dress, Size 2XL

athena costume

I recently bought this dress and fell in love instantly. It’s so casual for summer and can be easily layered with a denim jacket in fall. The fabric is such a nice jersey that has great stretch but still holds its shape. I also love that the straps are wide enough to wear a standard bra with it.

Dune Linen Shirt Dress

It’s linen, but better because it has a bit of stretch. You can find my full review of this dress and 4 ways to style it here.

Activewear and next-to-naked bodysuits

I wish I could shout to the rooftops how cool the US Next-to-Naked fabric is. I don’t know how they managed to make the fabric so stretchy, but at the same time thick and supportive – and not hot! Never in my life did I think I’d want to work out in a bodysuit, and it’s one of my favorite things to do for the treadmill or Peloton bike. I also have bodyshorts, shorts, and tanks in this fabric and I’m ordering more as I finish this post. Resist the urge to size up – it’s form-fitting but has so much stretch.

Nailah Button Down Tunic

This is such a breezy, long tunic that can be worn in many ways as it has buttons on the front and sides. When you want an extra layer but don’t want anything too heavy, this is the go-to. I’ve worn it over my bodysuit (above), over a dress, and over denim and a tank.

I could honestly go on with all the pieces I love, but this should be a good place to start!
