Where to Stay, Eat and Shop in Provence

When writer, artist, and photographer Jamie Beck moved to the French countryside, he expected to stay a year: It was just a respite from his life in Manhattan. But from vineyard villages to lush fields of lavender, she found that the slower-paced Provence suited her. So she stayed.

Beck’s new illustrated memoir serves as a guide and cookbook to the region, with local recipes she’s gathered over her five years in France. Below, she shares a short list of her favorite hotels, restaurants, and shops in Provence right now.

Jamie Beck’s Guide to Provence

Hotel Crillon Le Brave

Crillon-le-Breve, France

Located in the hilltop village of Crillon-le-Breve, this full-service luxury hotel features unique historic rooms set in an intricate web of old stone structures and terraces with panoramic views of Mont Ventoux. The spa uses clean beauty products by Tata Harper, and the hotel’s boutique carries luxury gifts ranging from Troodon candles to pieces by local high-end designer Valentina.

Arles Gordes, La Bastide

Gordes, France

The most luxurious of all the hotels in the area, this five-star property boasts multiple restaurants, a designer boutique, a Sisley spa and hammam, and a glamorous terrace pool that attracts an elite crowd. Besides the breathtaking views, brunch at L’Orangerie is an experience not to be missed.

Tingri Hotel

Menerbes, France

In the 17th century, one of Avignon’s wealthiest families built this stunning hilltop mansion in the style of an Italian palazzo. Later, it became the private residence of Madame Nancy Negley, an American patron of the arts. And most recently, it’s been converted into a four-suite boutique hotel with dollhouse-like rooms, charming fireplaces, claw-foot tubs, and a pool with a view. You can book the entire haveli.

Marie’s Bastide

Menerbes, France

One of my favorite hideaways. it bed and Breakfast welcomes you with wine (their own) and seasonal dishes made from garden-harvested vegetables – all in a fountained vineyard terrace. It’s the best of romantic country-chic and Provençal style. Take a daily walk before or after your meals.

the saint-hubert

Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt, France

A young Parisian couple set up a new watering hole in the heart of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt: they serve three meals a day using locally sourced seasonal ingredients and a selection of natural wines. There are panoramic views of the Luberon Mountains. Come on a Thursday and experience the village’s farmers’ market before lunch, then take a scenic 10-minute hike from the village to the Sant-Sat château.

Pragati Cafe

Menerbes, France

Located in my favorite mountain village of Menerbes, Progress features upscale bistro cuisine by two female chefs. The menu changes seasonally and often reflects new takes on classic French dishes. You can stop by any time of day for a drink or browse the magazine stands for all the latest in French fashion, news, art and culture.

house of ines

Apt, France

A lovely selection of antique dishes, butterfly cases, small chandeliers, hemp linens and other home furnishings. This is one of my favorite hangout in my own village.

la mob

Menerbes, France

With a selection of works by artists from the Maison Dora Maar residency program, Dora Maar’s own images, books, and other handcrafted items, this shop is a must-see if you’re in Ménerbes.

huge house

Aix-en-Provence, France

In the center of Aix-en-Provence, on the doorstep of the photogenic Place d’Albertus, hairstylist-to-the-stars Frédéric Fékai and his wife Shirin have opened a shop of home and beauty products made in Provence. Before or after your visit, hang out at Mind’s Corner, an American-style coffee house.

Wander the Sunday Antique Market

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorge, France

Walk along the canals to France’s second best antique market (Paris’s Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is the best) in the charming village of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Here, the streets are lined with stalls of antique furniture, art, tableware, and linens, as well as flower stalls, soap, cheese, and fruit vendors. Arrive in the morning and make a reservation for brunch at La Maison Moga, where an expert sommelier will present you with the perfect pairings for a French feast of eggs, breads, pastries, cheeses, fruit and charcuterie.

Arles walking tour

Spend a day strolling the ancient cobblestone streets of Arles, a city famous for being the home and frequent subject of painter Vincent van Gogh. With many local artisan shops, art galleries, and Roman structures, as well as a 2,000-year-old amphitheater still in use today, this is an ideal walking town. Eat at Chardon, have a drink at L’Arleton, stroll along the mighty Rhône, and peruse delightful Fragonard boutiques to buy Provençal souvenirs. In summer, be sure to visit Rencontres, a photography festival that takes over the galleries and cultural venues of this special city.

French Cooking with La Cuisine Provençale

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Take a private cooking class with American Jen Saito. She’ll take you on a trip to the local market to shop for ingredients to cook back in the kitchen.
